Tesla - 'Twisted Wires And The Acoustic Sessions'

While acoustic albums are not always to every rock fans taste, it's a real surprise.

Formed way back in 1984 and with record sales exceeding 10 million worldwide and a loyal fanbase, not least to say some damn fine music, Tesla are one of the great American rock bands of our time. Since reforming back in 2000, Tesla has been on a roll especially on the live front where they recouped lost ground after a lengthy hiatus. Their latest release is, as the title suggests, an acoustic album. This follows on from 2008s masterful ‘Forever More’ which was a real success for the band, both critically and commercially.

What makes this new album a significant release is that six of the songs, which were recorded back in 2005 at Brian Wheat’s J Street Recorders Studio, were the last to feature original member Tommy Skeoch who, depending on which sources you believe, either left the band in 2006 to spend time with his family or was forced out because of his substance abuse. The rest of the album includes acoustic recordings of obscure songs from their back catalogue and two newbie’s: ‘Second Street’ and ‘Better Off Without You.’ In a similar vein as ‘Five Men Acoustical Jam’ but minus the audience, ‘Twisted Wires’ is a really well crafted album with some fine tunes. There’s a cover of ‘I Love You’ originally by Climax Blues Band and Jeff Keith’s gritty blues tinged voice works really well in an acoustic setting.

Tesla have always shown they’re more than your average one dimensional American rock band and with the usual themes about love, heartache, desires, lust and what not, they’re in many ways, working class American heroes. They’ve given some of the older songs a second lease of life while the newer tracks blend in really well too. This is a strong release and while acoustic albums are not always to every rock fans taste, it’s a real surprise.
