John Pratt - 'Turn The Page'

An excellent album.

Vocalist John Pratt can trace his career back to the 80’s when he fronted LA’s Roxbury Drive and he would subsequently go on to release three albums under the Firefly moniker. This aside Pratt has been heavily involved in Film and TV music as a very successful and well respected writer, producer and performer. It has taken a long time but Pratt has finally issued an album under his own name that also features contributions from some of his former Firefly band mates and has been produced by Ryan Greene (who has worked with Cheap Trick, Alice Cooper and Lita Ford amongst others). Amongst the session musicians here that will be familiar to Fireworksreaders are drummer Ron Wikso (Foreigner, The Storm, Richie Sambora), guitarist John Thomas (Vixen) and Michael Alemania (Wilson Phillips, Vixen) on keyboards.

With ‘Turn The Page’ Pratt has delivered an album of slick AOR that draws from his sophisticated and mature songwriting skills and is perfectly complemented by his melodic vocals. The smooth and classy arrangements are set against a backdrop of mellow guitars that occasionally brings to mind artists of the calibre of Toto and Mike and The Mechanics. The opening pairing of ‘Take me There’ and ‘Searching for the Answer’ makes for a promising start with both heartfelt lyrics and an impassioned delivery. The hook laden ballad ‘Never Say Goodbye’, the emotional ‘Naiveté’s Ball’ and the laid back vibe of the title track are amongst the other highlights across a CD of thirteen songs where every track is fully deserving of its place. With a wealth of material to choose from Pratt has certainly ensured that the quality is maintained throughout.

‘Turn The Page’ is an excellent album and could be one of the real surprises of 2011; at the very least it will hopefully attract enough attention to persuade Pratt to issue a follow up and concentrate further on this aspect of his career and comes highly recommended by this reviewer
