Jef Scott - 'Ten Stories'

A fine collection of fairly lightweight AOR, originally released on vinyl back in 1986.

The problem with 'undiscovered gems' from back in the 1980s, as this album's press release suggests, is usually that there is a reason why they were undiscovered in the first place. Jef Scott's 'Ten Stories' is no exception to that rule. Despite this, the album is a fine collection of fairly lightweight AOR, originally released on vinyl back in 1986. Singer / songwriter Jef – nothing to do with Jeff Scott Soto – also plays most instruments on the album with help from a few friends, most notably drummer Jay Schellen of Unruly Child and Asia fame amongst others.

Opening tracks 'One By One' and 'I Watch My City Sleep' bounce along nicely, full of keyboard harmonies layered over melodic guitar riffs, with Jef's vocals being just a little rough around the edges, reminiscent of a Bryan Adams feel. Standout track 'Graceland' is one of those annoyingly familiar sounding tracks, instantly catchy chorus and enough guitar to fully justify the Rock in the AOR tag. But the rest of the album fails to consistently hit those heights. It's decent stuff, but the typical light, summery rock, in the style that Huey Lewis and The News did so well, might be perfect for a movie soundtrack but likely to be tucked away in the middle rather than taking the opening credits.

The other issue here is that even though there may well be a resurgence of interest in melodic rock from this era, with so many other reissues and repackaged albums around at the moment, 'Ten Stories' is still trying to compete with some of those same albums as it was back then.

There are some nice tunes here, have no doubt, but overall, the album lacks consistency and unless you are an 80s AOR addict, it's likely to remain undiscovered.
